REXBURG, Idaho — Operation Underground Railroad will be holding their “Run to Break the Chain”

fundraiser race on September 23 at Smith Park.

The organization will donate 100 percent of the race proceeds to fulfilling their mission. The prices of

the race range from $20 for the 5K, $35 for the 10K and $45 for the half marathon.

You can register for the race online by signing up on http://itsyourrace.com. You can also find

information on how to register in person by visiting the race website.

The race begins on September 23 with the half marathon at 8 a.m., followed by the 10k at 8:15 a.m. and

ending with the 5k at 8:30 a.m.

All participants of the race will not only be spreading awareness, but they will also receive a swag bag

including a t-shirt and a finisher’s medal. There will also be additional prizes for first, second and third

place in each distance.

You can also get involved in the event by volunteering. Volunteers for the race can participate for any

time slot they are available for and can assist by managing water stations, first aid stations, packet pick

up or more.

If you would like to volunteer, you can do so by visiting the official “Run to Break the Chain Rexburg”

Facebook page to contact a director.

You can also become an official volunteer for Operation Underground Railroad by visiting their

website, http://ourrescue.org. Duties can include attending monthly meetings and brainstorming for

future fundraising events. Heidi Fransen, the race director and former community relations manager,

shared her experience of how she first got involved by saying, “In early 2015 was when I first heard

about Operation Underground Railroad and obviously wanted to help like everyone does and didn’t

know how. I ran half marathons at the time, so it was just one of the first ideas to come to my head.”

She felt inspired by the mission because of her own children and wanted to help make a difference in

the lives of others. She now helps volunteers run this event and has an active role in the organization.

Now three years later, through the Run to Break the Chain event, over $9000 have been contributed to

this cause.

Operation Underground Railroad said on their official website, http://ourrescue.org, “Today, 2 million

children worldwide live as sex slaves. 73 million children under 12 years old are forced, laborers. We

free the children. Then we break the chain.” They continued by outlining three steps on how this is

accomplished: “We locate child sex slaves and connect with local law enforcement, we rescue the

children and take them to safe havens for rehabilitation, we go after ringleaders and break up their

organizations.”  Organizers hold the raise not only raise funds for the cause but also to raise awareness.

Only 184 people registered for the race the first year. That number grew to 258 the second year.

Operation Underground Railroad hopes that the number of those participating will continue to grow

and bring awareness to more and more people.
